Eco-design of packaging
Made for recycling - why eco-design
The concept of Extended Producer Responsibility, as referred to in Directive (EU) 2018/851 of the European Parliament and of the Council, indicates that the amount of fees paid by entrepreneurs introducing packaged products into EU markets should be differentiated according to the characteristics of the packaging used, in particular its durability, reusability and recyclability, and the presence of hazardous substances. The less environmentally friendly the packaging, the more the trader introducing it will pay for subsequent collection and management.
Based on Interzero's experience, we have identified 3 main difficulties in packaging recycling:
- Inadequate packaging - Poor packaging design can confuse intelligent sorting machines, leading to lower recycling rates. For example, the use of oversized labels and black plastics means that sorting machines do not correctly recognise the packaging material.
- Using a combination of different materials in one package - can make it difficult for consumers to correctly separate or assign the packaging to the correct fraction. Even in the case of a jar with a paper label and metal lid, separation by the consumer can sometimes be problematic, as they are not sure which parts to separate (lid) and which parts to leave (label), as they are not a barrier to glass recycling. The biggest challenge, however, is posed by multi-material packaging (e.g. aluminium-coated snack bags), where separation of the individual raw materials is completely impossible.
- Low level of education - packaging is sometimes simply thrown away in the wrong container so that it cannot reach the right recycler.
Made for Recycling - Packaging research and eco-design
The Made4Recycling service is the answer to these challenges. In the field of packaging eco-design, we have developed a research and advisory service for customers seeking advice and recommendations on packaging recycling.
Our services include:
- assessing the recyclability and sorting of packaging,
- consultation on choice of materials, design guidelines and market experience
- creating an action plan in cooperation with the customer's purchasing, marketing and packaging design departments
- seminars and training
- study visits to modern sorting plants
What does the Made for Recycling service offer?
Thanks to a packaging study conducted on the basis of a methodology developed in consultation with two renowned institutes (bifa and Fraunhofer IVV), the customer receives a report that includes an assessment of the recycling potential of packaging on a 20-point scale:
Packaging receiving 18-20 points on the test scale is rewarded with a certificate and the Made for Recycling label.
The report also outlines barriers to recycling, giving a picture of the changes needed to make packaging design greener.
"A change in thinking about sustainability is needed. One of the key things that needs to change in order to meet the new requirements and achieve recycling levels is a thoughtful green packaging design", says Markus Müller-Drexel, Managing Director of Interzero Circular Solutions Germany GmbH.

History - key moments
2022: Setting a target for the future and founding Interzero: The owners of the ALBA Group, to which Interseroh also belongs, are restructuring a group of companies. They are creating agile units that correspond to market requirements and individual business models. In this way, Dr. Axel Schweitzer is tackling, among other things, the Asian business and the plastics recycling business. With the introduction of the Interzero brand, he underlines the company's international vision of a "world without waste".
2021: Launch of the new Interseroh+ system - with an innovative concept that goes far beyond packaging licensing. The aim is to close the material cycle in a 'recycling alliance' with industry and trade, thereby jointly creating a closed loop economy that benefits companies as well as resource and climate protection.
2019: Point in time for the entry into force of the German Packaging Act on 1 January 2019: Following the successful launch in summer 2018 of the online packaging licensing shop Lizenzero, the Interzero Dual System (DSI) is now available to packaging distributors of all sizes with solutions tailored to their needs.
Interzero is also expanding its services internationally and is present with environmental services in Austria, Slovenia, Poland, Croatia, the Czech Republic and the Italy.

The cyclical drawing up of environmental reports and statements is just one of the many time-consuming duties that entrepreneurs have. To avoid stress, errors and irregularities, it is worth entrusting this duty to the qualified experts at Interzero.
Who is required to submit environmental reports?
In connection with their operations, many entrepreneurs have to fulfil environmental reporting obligations. These reporting obligations apply not only to large entities, but also to micro-entrepreneurs and sole traders. Despite this, many companies are still unaware of the need for environmental reporting and therefore fail to fulfil their statutory obligations.
Entrepreneur, if you are engaged in an activity that results in:
- you introduce gases and/or dust into the air (have company cars, own heating in the form of a boiler, operate air conditioning, etc.),
- you generate waste (other than municipal waste),
- you place packaged products on the domestic market,
- you place electrical and electronic equipment on the domestic market,
- you bring vehicles into the country, and therefore batteries, accumulators, tyres, oils and lubricants,
- you provide your customers with plastic shopping bags,
- you pack meals and drinks in packaging made of plastic,
then you are probably covered by the obligation to submit at least one of the environmental reports.
Entrust the preparation of your environmental reports to Interzero's experts!
Did you know that you can delegate your reporting responsibilities to Interzero's environmental experts? The deadline for submitting EMS and F-GAS reports is 28 February each year for the previous year, and 29 February in leap years. Reports must be submitted via the electronic form on the Reporting Database (BDS), using your company's individual account. As part of its environmental consultancy and outsourcing services, Interzero offers support in both the registration of the entity and the preparation and timely submission of EMS and FGC reports,
Water use declarations must be submitted quarterly, within 30 days of the day falling at the end of each calendar quarter.
- for Q2 of the year - by 30 April,
- for Q2 of the year - by 30 July,
- for Q3 of the year - by 30 October,
- for Q4 of the year - by 30 January of the following year.
The type of declaration to be submitted depends on the type of water service being used. Interzero's environmental consultants can help you choose the right form and submit your declaration on time.
The annual report on products, packaging and their waste management is submitted by 15 March of the current year for the previous year. The report can only be submitted electronically using an individual account in the BDO system. Our environmental advisors will help you with registration with BDO, and will then prepare and submit the annual product and packaging report on behalf of your company.
