Green light for chemical recycling - EC proposes new rules and invites consultation
8 July 2025. The European Commission has launched a public consultation on a draft implementing act that will set out rules for calculating, verifying and reporting the chemical recycling content of single-use plastic beverage bottles (SUPs). In addition to YES to chemical recycling, the EC has also said NO to recyclate from waste collected outside the EU - from 2025, it will not count towards the 25% recyclate target for PET bottles.

Delays in implementing GOZ in Poland - NIK report reveals reasons
The Supreme Audit Office has published a post-audit report that identifies numerous shortcomings in the implementation of GOZ in Poland between 2018 and 2022. These have led to a significant decline in the circularity index of the Polish economy and a failure to achieve the waste management targets set by the EU.

Almost 180 million from plastic bags. Where will the money from the recycling levy go?
Nearly PLN 180 million - that is how much revenue was generated from the recycling fee for 2024. Since 2018, every plastic shopping bag (except for the so-called rip-offs) has been subject to an additional fee, the aim of which is not only to contribute to the state budget, but, above all, to reduce the use of disposables. Global warming accelerates - Earth's average temperature will rise by 1.5 degrees C in three years' time
At current levels of greenhouse gas emissions, the Earth's average temperature could rise to 1.5 degrees C over the pre-industrial era within three years, and to 1.6 or 1.7 degrees C in the next nine years. Compiled by 60 leading climate scientists, the report shows that the world is still not doing enough to meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Government implements EU battery regulation. We know the assumptions of the draft law
The Government's legislative work list has published the assumptions of the new Batteries and Waste Batteries Act (number UC107), the main aim of which is to bring Polish law in line with EU Regulation 2023/1542. The document implements comprehensive regulations for the entire life cycle of batteries - from design, production to collection and processing.

SUP law to be amended - EC urges Poland to address shortcomings

EC withdraws Green Claims Directive that was supposed to regulate green claims
On 20 June, the European Commission announced the withdrawal of the draft Green Claims Directive, which was supposed to precisely define the rules for filing so-called green claims. The main reason for the abandonment of work on the draft was the introduction of changes to its content which, in the EC's view, would have been an excessive burden on micro-entrepreneurs.

Changes are coming to the environmental decision-making procedure
The Ministry of Climate and Environment is working on new regulations for issuing environmental decisions. The amendment is expected to streamline the administrative procedure and remove current interpretative doubts. According to a communiqué in the Government's legislative work list, the draft law may be adopted by the Council of Ministers as early as Q3 2025.Project no: UD224.

Poland with the worst tyre recycling system in Europe
Every year in Poland, as many as 25 000 waste tyres end up in wild landfills. Only 75% of pneumatic tyres are handed over to processing plants, and solid tyres are not recycled at all. At the same time, the industry has long struggled unsuccessfully to bring Polish tyre recovery regulations into line with EU regulations. These and many more problems of the tyre recycling industry are highlighted in a report by the Polish Tyre Recycling Association.

EUDR: What companies should know about the new EU deforestation regulation
Global deforestation is one of the greatest threats to our climate, biodiversity and the livelihoods of millions of people. To address this challenge, the European Union adopted a new EU regulation in May 2023 to restrict trade in products related to deforestation and forest degradation. This regulation, also known as the EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation), requires companies to demonstrate that, as of 30 December 2025, their supply chains are free of products that contribute to global deforestation.

EU to tighten regulations for granulate processing companies. There is an agreement to reduce microplastic spills
The Council of the EU and the European Parliament have reached a preliminary agreement on the shape of legislation aimed at reducing microplastic pollution. This time, the EU regulations will apply to the entire plastic pellet supply chain and will mainly cover companies producing and processing plastic pellets.

Net zero 2050 at risk? European Union may fail to meet climate neutrality target
The European Union may not manage to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, warns WWF. According to experts, the current pace of action is insufficient, and the lack of advanced technologies and the complicated international situation are resulting in serious difficulties in achieving this ambitious goal. In Poland, the road to decarbonisation may be even more bumpy, and the cost of the transition could range from 4.5 to 5% GDP.

Collection levels and product fee in a deposit system
With the launch of the deposit system, a number of new obligations will fall on its participants and operators. One of these is the need to achieve minimum collection rates for packaging and packaging waste.
